Ayala Moriel Hanami

By Tom

Ayala is a Canadian natural perfumer, who made an appearance here in Los Angeles to introduce her new scent Hanami.

Ayala explained, with her charming accent that she had moved to Vancouver from her home in Israel and longed to recreate the heady scents she remembered from home, which led her into perfumery.

Hanami she told us was based upon a poem, but also of the memory of a friend leading her with covered eyes down a city street to uncover them to the sight of a street full of fully-bloomed cherry blossoms, and the desire to capture that scent: the juxtaposition of the hard smells of the city and the creamy whiteness of the trees.

Did she succeed? Dunno. There's a sad dearth of Cherry trees in Los Angeles, so I cannot write to the perfection of the simulacrum. I can write that the scent is lovely, a haiku of lotus, tonka, vetiver and woods. People like Ayala make me able to face those EU regulations with less fear..

I smelled several of Ayala's scents at Blunda, but being an idiot, I didn't note them, except that there were two that Wendy wore which she must buy immediately. Check her blog and see if she mentions them.

Available at Ayala's website and at these retailers

I think she is an absolute genius w/ floral scents, so I'm trusting this one is fantastic. I was lucky enough to get her Sahleb, which is a gourmand that is perfection. Thanks for this review!

We have a Stella cherry tree in our Northern Calif backyard-- it blooms prodigiously and delivers a big crop, but never a whiff of scent. Local area has loads of fruit trees, commercial orchards even, but only the citrus blossoms have any scent. Or am I anosmic to the other trees? Several kinds of magnolias thrive heareabouts too, but none has any fragrance that I can detect. What's up?

I don't think they really have a scent; she was more tryint to capture a moment or a feeling then the literal scent. I think she did a great job of it without going down the cliché cherry cough-syrup road usual whenever anyone mentions cherry blossoms

Tom, Hanami sounds just lovely! In general, some of my favorite Ayala's fragrances are her most personal ones. I spotted bakul attar among the notes, which interested me very much--it is such a gorgeous note and quite rare too.

Re - what Gretchen said - cherry blossoms do have a lovely scent, but in my experience the ornamental types have more than the fruiting cherries do. It is very delicate and hard to capture, however.

Hanami sounds so wonderful!

Tomski-

When Heather's scent project was under way, i received a sample of this-
I thought it was brilliant.

Plus, the lady herself is such a genuine, dear creature-
It's a pleasure to help support someone like her.
Know what I mean ?

Beats giving the dosh to some corporation that really doesn't care.....

I have been learning some of the techniques to make beautiful crafts!Interesting and useful technique. I could see that there will be some great sheets of fabric being produced here for further embellishment.
