Perfume Review: Parfums 06130 Lys

Being a big fan of Parfums Zéro Six Cent-Trente scents, especially Yuzu Rouge, and their incredibly considerate, generous customer service, I was very excited about the new release, Lys. The notes of the new perfume sounded very appealing: cedrat, bergamot, mandarin, coriander, grapefruit and blackcurrant, water lily, cardamom, verbena, thyme, nutmeg and rose, musk, vetiver, sandalwood, moss and (“a very discreet touch of”) patchouli. Considering that the list included quite a lot of spices, coriander, cardamom, nutmeg, I hoped that Lys would be a new and unusual take on the water lily note, a piquant and fresh scent with a warmer, “substantial” base.

In reality Lys was not in the least alike the scent I conjured in my imagination based on the list of notes. The perfume was unexpectedly sweet; the rose was very prominent in the top notes, prominent to the extent that I thought that my sample was mislabeled and was in fact a citrus-rose blend Yuzu Rouge. The lily note became more evident in the middle stage and, as water lilies are very often prone to do, it had a manifestly aquatic undertone. The spices were basically non-existent on my skin, as were sandalwood and moss. The rose note was still apparent in the drydown, and if I had to describe Lys in a few words only, I would have said that it was a rose and water lily blend, a sweet, rather indistinct scent with a pronounced marine accord. It was perfectly lovely and most probably would be quite pleasant in summer, but I found it uninteresting and unexciting.

Lys is available at Aedes, $90.00 for 3.4oz.

Well, yawn. Sounds kinda missable. But dang, I DO have the sweet-eating skin. Yuzu Rouge as citrus-rose? It's a grapefruit on me (a pink graperfuit, but still.) That rose done gone, never did smell her.

PS I have to type btgbqimp in wavy letters to post this. I mess these up all the time, are they getting longer? Do you have a special March verify where soon I'm gonna, like, have to do a calculus problem to post? ;-)

Thank you for this post which raised a question for me: The issue with notes description and an intrinsic expectation. Take rose as note that is in there. All of us have different images of roses in their heads(noses) and thus, the expectations might be quite different (is it the scent of the rose in my garden, the synthetic rose from lush, the rose scent of the rose absolute.....) Thus, I tend the longer the more not to talk about notes, but rather about visions behind a scent.

March,
Yawn indeed...Have you tried Un Zest de Rose by Rosine? I wonder if that one loses its sweetness on you too.

Sorry about the verfication thingie. I suffer from it too...but it is a necessary evil, really. :-(

Christina,
It is nice and but it didn't wow me. Do you like lily notes in perfume in general?

Andy,
There are some perfume description that say too much about the ingredients, in a way raising reader's expectations about the scent (which will inevitably end up smelling less exciting than it sounded on paper). Others say very little or nothing at all and in a way, frustrating though as they may be, they don't give false impressions and also such laconic descriptions tease our imagination...
Personally, I find it fascinating to read about perfumer's vision behind a scent.

Hmmmmm. . . even Yuzu Rouge doesn't do much on my skin (though it smells great on others), so I think I'll pass.
On notes (sorta off-topic but interesting): I was at Le Labo this weekend, and they have a fascinating kit with a lot of numbered raw ingredients + a cheat sheet--to train your nose, I think. Very expensive, but it was great fun to play with!

I adore Yuzu Rouge so had high hopes for this one, but am not having much luck this spring. Need to give it a second try, but the first try was a serious letdown.

I am afraid to ask...how much was it? I want it!

Robin,
I had too much luck with new releases recently, falling in love left, right and center. I am overdue for a real scrubber. This wasn't a scrubber at all, but I also thought it was a letdown.

Oh, dear, I want it too, but it was over $400--don't remember exactly; it's in this cool metallic case if that helps:)
I did score some Ciste (love it--more like your version #1 on me) Patchouli (should be called smoky leather--love it) and Iris (smells--surprise--like Iris; very elegant and I like it a lot; already got a female fragrance compliment on it:)

Oh...I'll have two of the please...yeah right :-)
I have samples of all the Le Labos thanks to someone's incredible kindness and will start sampling them in earnest. Smelled Iris once and it was so lovely!

PS Except for the Ecume I'm not loving any of the Rosines.... I just don't think Rose is my best gal.

PS I just had to type pgzdck hahah say that out loud! Won't be funny unless your mind is dirty and immature like mine.

March,
I like roses in perfume and they mostly like me back, but I am easily bored of rose soliflores. I need Something Else to be quite prominent in my rose scent. Like a spice...or something. When it's just rose ...*yawn*...and I am kind of over the rose-citrus combo as well.

Victoria,
It is a lovely scent, it might actually flourish on someone with the right skin chemistry. I would love to read your impressions when you get to try it.

Hee! "pgzdck" is hilarious March. I actually did have to say it out loud to figure out what you meant, hee hee hee.

Lys doesn't sound in wear quite so nice as it reads. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes. I actually do like water lily and rose, but I've not really been at all in the mood for that lately. And for summer, I figure I am inevitably going to be wearing Cumming more than anything else, so it sounds like this won't inspire me much at all.

Katie,
Cumming, really? I still haven't tried it real well (that does not sound right, does it? LOL)
I am kind of thinking of emotionally blackmailing my husband into sampling and then reviewing both Cumming and Cannabis Santal. The fun he would have with the names alone! :-)
